South Luangwa alone makes for a rewarding shorter trip; pushing on to North Luangwa and the Amatololo Experience turns it into a proper expedition. Here are both versions.
Route A: South Luangwa Highlights (7 Days)
A focused trip for travellers who want exceptional walking safaris and game viewing without the remote logistics of North Luangwa.
Day 1 - Lusaka to Chipata. This is a full day's drive – 10 –12 hours - so treat it as pure travel. The road from Lusaka to the Luangwa Bridge is badly potholed, so budget extra time. Fuel up along the way in Nyimba, Petauke, or Katete, and overnight at Mama Rulas Guesthouse, Chipata.
Day 2 - Chipata to Mfuwe. Another rough stretch, so take it slow. Fill up in Chipata before you leave, since fuel in Mfuwe isn't always reliable. Settle in at The Wildlife Camp or Track and Trail.
Days 3 - 4 - South Luangwa National Park. Two full days of walking safaris and game drives from your Mfuwe base - this is prime South Luangwa territory.
Day 5 - 6 - Mfuwe to Nsefu. Move camp to Zikomo Camp, Nsefu, for a change of scenery and excellent game viewing in the park's eastern sector.
Day 7 - Begin the journey home, or continue on to Route B below if you're extending into North Luangwa.
Route B: South & North Luangwa Explorer (14 Days)
The fuller valley experience, adding North Luangwa and the Amatololo Loop. Dry season only (roughly June–October) - check ahead, as some camps close entirely in the rains.
Days 1 - 6 - South Luangwa, following Route A above through Chipata, Mfuwe, and Nsefu.
Day 7 - Nsefu to Luambe National Park. Overnight at Kamukonzo Community Campsite.
Day 8 - Luambe to North Luangwa. Overnight at Ituba Camp.
Days 9 - 12 - North Luangwa (Amatololo Experience). Enter via the Chifunda pontoon crossing. Three nights exploring this remote wilderness from Mushika, Nkholo, or Muzungwe - a 4x4 is essential here, services are nil, and a local guide is a real asset.
Day 13 - 14 - Begin the journey home, or continue north to link with the Northern Circuit if you're travelling with more time up your sleeve.
Planning Notes
Carry extra fuel, water, and supplies once you're past Mfuwe - services thin out fast heading into Luambe and North Luangwa.
Mayana Butchery in Mfuwe is a good last stock-up point if you're heading further into the valley.
A 4x4 is essential from North Luangwa onward; trailers aren't recommended on these tracks.
