Suggested Routes: The Western Circuit

New to the Western Circuit? Start with the full route guide for trip essentials, tips, and the complete campsite list — then come back here for a ready-made itinerary.

The Western Circuit is genuinely two (or three) different trips in one region - Kafue, Barotseland/Liuwa, and the remote far northwest around Ikelenge. Below are two ways to approach it: a focused Kafue loop for travellers with a week, and a fuller expedition that adds Liuwa and Barotseland for those with two to three weeks.

Route A: The Kafue Explorer (7 Days)

A self-contained loop through Kafue National Park, Zambia's largest, without the long push west to Barotseland.

  • Day 1 – 4 - Lusaka to Southern Kafue, via Mumbwa. A full day eploring the Southern Kafue and Nanzhila Plains from Hornbill Safari Camp.

  • Day 4 – Southern Kafue to Itezhi Tezhi. Settle in at Chibila Camp or Musungwa Campsite, both well placed for game drives around the dam.

  • Day 4 – 7 – Itezhi Tezhi to Central Kafue, A full day exploring the central sector - Kasabushi is an excellent base for game drives along the Kafue River.

  • Day 7 - Return to Lusaka, or continue north if you're linking onward to another circuit.

Route B: The Full Western Expedition (16–18 Days)

For experienced overlanders combining Kafue, Liuwa Plain, Barotseland, and a run out to Ikelenge and the source of the Zambezi.

  • Days 1 – 6  - Kafue National Park, following Route A above to work south to north through Southern, Itezhi Tezhi, and Central Kafue.

  • Day 6 – Kasabushi to Busanga Plains, Push on toward the Busanga Plains, heading for Bongololo Campsite, the closest camp to Busanga itself.

  • Day 7 - Busanga Plains. A full day exploring one of Zambia's most photogenic wildlife areas - wide open floodplain, big cat sightings, and dramatic skies.

  • Day 8 - Busanga to West Lunga NP. A long push north-west, overnighting at Kabompo River Lodge.

  • Day 9 – West Lunga to Ikelenge. Settle in at Nchila Safari Lodge Campsite, in Zambia's remote far northwest.

  • Day 10 – Ikelenge. A day to explore and visit the source of the Zambezi River.

  • Day 11 – Ikelenge to West Lunga NP. Overnight back at Kabompo River Lodge to break the journey to Liuwa.

  • Day 12 – West Lunga to Liuwa Plain NP. A long day heading south - refuel and restock at Mongu's Shoprite, your last reliable supply point before Liuwa.

  • Days 12 – 16 – Liuwa Plain National Park. Four nights split across the African Parks-managed campsites (Katoyana, Sikale, Kwale, or Mukalabumbu) - if you're travelling in November–December, this is peak wildebeest migration season.

  • Day 16 – Liuwa to Kabula Lodge. Head south to Kabula Lodge.

  • Day 17 – Kabula Lodge, a good stopover as you continue south toward Livingstone.

  • Day 18 - Kabula Lodge to Livingstone, closing out the expedition at Victoria Falls

Planning Notes

  • A 4x4 is essential for Liuwa Plain's thick sand; Kafue is manageable without one but a 4x4 is still recommended.

  • Fuel stops are genuinely limited across this circuit - carry extra, especially between Mumbwa and Mongu, and through the Liuwa leg.

  • If two to three weeks isn't realistic in one go, Route A (Kafue) and the Barotseland/Liuwa leg of Route B work well as two separate trips.

  • Planning a proper expedition out here? Get in touch and we'll help make sure your setup can handle the distance and the sand.
